Join me on a walk through the history of the skyscraper, born and bred in Chicago. We’ll start by exploring the historic Fine Arts Building’s nooks and crannies, and visiting my private studio in this vertical community of artists, architects and musicians.

Then we’re off to view my all-time favorite tall buildings, and a few not-so-tall, on an historical excursion that I customize just for you on your unique Chicago private tour.

By the end of our time together, I promise these will be your all-time favorite
buildings, too.

This walk includes the prime examples of Chicago modern architecture’s past, present and future, plus a few surprises that are off the map.

It also allows time and space for you to spend as much time as you like experiencing these masterpieces, whether it’s taking a few more photos, or simply taking in a detail or two you discover on your own.

It’s an experience you simply cannot have on a large group tour where you’re wearing a radio transmitter to hear the docent. Off the Map excursions are more than tours; they’re conversations.

So make your walk through Chicago architecture one to remember forever. Come on a unique Off the Map excursion of the City of Skyscrapers.

Off The Map Chicago Tours - Unique Architecture Private Tours - Fine Arts Building

The venerable old Fine Arts Building sits squarely next to Adler & Sullivan's landmark Auditorium Building on South Michigan Avenue, and thrives today as an amazing vertical arts community filled with artists, musicians, instrument makers and architects. Frank Lloyd Wright had a studio there, as did the Chicago sculptor Lorado Taft, along with many other prominent Chicago musicians and artists. Originally built as a carriage works and showroom for the Studebaker Company in 1885, the Fine Arts Building was converted into a haven for artists and musicians in 1898, and has remained that way ever since. Walking down the dim hallways, visitors can witness opera singers going through their scales, pianists practicing, scores of art studios--even a classical sheet music store. There are violin-makers, bow-makers, wind instrument repair shops, a yoga studio, and a fine piano store. Every second Friday of the month, this active community of artists and musicians opens its doors for an evening open house. Visitors can walk in the magnificent vaulted lobby, get into one of the last elevators still operated by a real live human elevator operator and explore the 10 floors of studios. You can visit my private studio and a few other nooks and crannies I know about in the Fine Arts Building when you come on an Off the Map Chicago private tour of Chicago architecture. Architect S.S. Beman designed the Fine Arts Building, and like its next door neighbor, the Auditorium, the Fine Arts Building is a treasured Chicago landmark.
